Coin value checker

Pick the denomination and enter the year. You land on a value page with the mintage by mint, the varieties to check and a reference price range by condition.

Four things decide what a coin is worth

  1. Date and mint mark. The same design from a different mint can be a hundred times scarcer. Mint-mark positions are listed on every value page.
  2. Condition. Collectors grade on a 1–70 scale; a coin that never circulated is worth many times a worn one. The app gives an estimated condition grade (not a certified grade).
  3. Varieties and errors. Doubled dies, repunched mint marks and wrong-metal strikes are what turn pocket change into money. See error coins.
  4. Demand and metal. Silver and gold coins never fall below melt value; popular series carry a premium over scarce but unloved ones.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check the value of a coin?

Find the year and mint mark, judge the wear, and look the coin up on its value page: the page lists a reference range by condition and the varieties that raise the price. For a quick first answer, photograph the coin and let the identifier do the lookup.

Is the coin value checker free?

Yes. The year lookup and every value page on this site are free, and the Coin Checker app is free to download. Values are reference ranges from published price guides and recent sales, with the date they were checked.

Why are coin values given as a range?

Because condition decides most of the price. A worn 1944 wheat cent is worth a few cents; the same coin uncirculated with full red colour is worth dollars, and a rare variety of it is worth hundreds. A range by grade is honest; a single number is not.

Where do your coin values come from?

Published price guides and recent auction and dealer sales, named on each page with the date they were checked. We are not a dealer and the values are not an offer to buy. For a rare coin, a grading-service certification is what a buyer will pay for.

What makes an old coin valuable?

Low mintage for the date and mint, high grade, a recognised variety or error, silver or gold content, and demand from collectors. Age alone does not: many 1900s coins are worth face value or melt, while some 1969 and 1972 cents are worth thousands.
