Coin identifier

Identify any coin from a photo

The web identifier is being connected. Until it is, the Coin Checker app identifies a coin from your phone's camera: its name, year, rarity and an estimated value.

  • One coin, centred, filling the frame
  • Daylight or a lamp from the side; no flash glare
  • Sharp focus on the date and mint mark
Coin values by year

Look it up by denomination.

Every value page lists the mintage by mint, the varieties and errors to check, and a reference price range by condition, with the date the values were checked.

How it works

Photo in. Answer out.

The things a dealer checks, in the order a dealer checks them.

01 / IDENTIFY

Name the coin.

Design, country, denomination and year, matched against a database of 300,000+ coin types.

02 / CHECK

Mint mark, varieties, errors.

The value page for that year shows where the mint mark sits, which doubled dies and repunched mint marks exist, and the tests that separate a $1 coin from a $1,000 one.

03 / VALUE

Estimate and track.

A reference value range by condition, an estimated grade, and a place to save the coin so your collection's value updates over time.

Honest by design

Estimates, clearly labelled.

Values on this site are reference ranges with a source and a check date. A rare variety or a high grade needs authentication before it is worth the big number, and every page says so.

Frequently asked questions

How do I identify a coin from a picture?

Photograph the coin in good light, filling the frame, with the Coin Checker app on your phone. It matches the coin against a database of 300,000+ coin types and returns the name, year, rarity and an estimated value. The web version of the identifier on this page is being connected.

Is the coin identifier free?

The Coin Checker app is free to download on iPhone and Android, with an optional Premium subscription: a weekly plan with a 3-day free trial or a yearly plan with a 7-day free trial. The FAQ page covers plans, cancelling and refunds.

How accurate is a coin identifier app?

Accuracy depends most on the photo: a sharp, well-lit shot gives the best result. Worn, damaged, ancient or counterfeit coins are harder, and no app can authenticate a rare coin: a 1943 copper cent or a 1955 doubled die still needs a grading service before anyone pays a rare-coin price. Treat the result as a first opinion.

How much is my coin worth?

Four things set the price: the date and mint mark, the condition (grade), whether it is a recognised variety or error, and what buyers are paying right now. Look the year up on the coin value pages for a reference range and the varieties to check, then get an estimated grade from the app.

Can the app grade my coin?

Coin Checker gives an estimated condition grade (not a certified grade) from the photo. It is useful for deciding whether a coin is worth sending to PCGS or NGC, but it is not a certified grade and a buyer will not treat it as one.

Does it identify foreign and old coins?

The App Store listing describes Coin Checker as identifying coins from around the world against a database of 300,000+ coin types. For ancient or very rare coins, read the result as a lead to research, not a final answer, and confirm anything valuable with a grading service.
